Many people prefer to grind their own coffee immediately before brewing. Whole coffee beans stay fresher longer than ground coffee because less surface area is exposed to air. Whether the coffee is ground coarsely or finely depends on the method that will be used for brewing. Conical burr coffee grinders are a popular choice for those who like to make espresso.
In general, the faster the brewing method, the more finely the coffee should be ground. If finely ground coffee beans are used to make drip or percolator coffee, it can end up too strong and bitter. On the other hand, finely ground beans work great for making espresso.
Burr coffee grinders use two rotating elements, and the coffee beans are crushed and ground between them. Grinding releases the oils in the coffee, making the resulting coffee richer and smoother tasting. Conical burr coffee grinders have grinders made of steel that are able to grind while rotating slowly – less than 500 revolutions per minute. Blade grinders produce less uniform grinds and expose the grinds to more frictional heat, which can take away some of the flavor.
Because conical burr coffee grinders grind relatively slowly, the frictional heating of the coffee is minimal. This means that the maximum coffee aroma is maintained. Another advantage to conical burr coffee grinders is that they’re quieter than other grinders, produce a uniform grind, and do not make super fine particles that can clog up filters.
Conical burr coffee grinders are loved for the uniformity of the grounds. While flat burr grinders are able to make finer grinds, such as Turkish coffee grinds, which are like powder, they are also more expensive, rotate faster, and therefore expose the grinds to more frictional heat.

You and I Gong came into being almost by accident in the late sixties when Daevid Allen was refused entry back into Britain following European dates with Soft Machine. Deciding to stay in Paris Allen began working alongside Gilli Smyth and various musicians on what would eventually be recognised as Gong. The first recognised recordings from the band were Magick Brother, Mystic Sister in 1970. Followed by albums such as Camembert Electrique, Flying Teapot, Angels Egg and You. These last three albums followed the fortunes of Zero The Hero and told the tale of the pothead pixies and was told over the course of the next three albums and became the Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy. This mythological story was extremely popular and the resultant albums sold exceptionally well however following the departure of core members Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Steve Hillage citing the age old musical differences reason for leaving the band Gong moved in a more jazz oriented direction with the addition of Allan Holdsworth alongside Pierre Moerlen and Didier Malherbe. Allen, Smyth and Hillage have all recorded as solo artists and Smyth subsequently formed the offshoot …
